# The 30-to-61-Second Shorts in This Feed Had 4.6x the Median Views of the 15-Second Ones. Stop Trimming Your Story to Fit a Number ![Flat illustration of a phone frame beside two vertical bars of different heights, the taller one topped with a glowing star](https://bgxgaweqenuervlutsyo.supabase.co/storage/v1/object/public/generated-images/e950d401fa8ac9b8681394e641ca1d4a.png) On October 29, 2026 we pulled 20 YouTube Shorts from ClipNovia Discover and sorted them by length. The ten that ran 30 to 61 seconds had a median of 2.9 million views. The eight that ran 15 seconds or less had a median of 631,000. Six of the ten longer Shorts passed 1 million views; three of the eight short ones did. **Shorter is safer is an instinct, not a result. In this feed, the 30-to-61-second Shorts had 4.6x the median views of the 15-second-or-less ones.** Before anyone tweets that as a law: it is 20 videos from one feed on one day, mostly AI animation, and the feed is a list of videos that already took off. It shows what winners look like in this slice, not what length causes views. The limits are spelled out below, and the length picker you can copy is in the middle. ## What the usual advice actually says Length advice is not one rule, so here is what the pages we read on 2026-10-29 say: - [Bytecap](https://www.bytecap.io/research/best-youtube-shorts-length) (published July 17, 2026) suggests starting at 30 to 60 seconds when a clip needs a full hook, idea and payoff, and 15 to 30 seconds for a single sharp moment. Its rule is that the right length is the shortest version that keeps the payoff. It also says its length data comes from OpusClip's April 2026 count of 2,879,747 clips users created, which shows what people made, not which lengths performed better. - [Gofaceless](https://www.gofaceless.ai/en/blog/youtube-shorts-retention-rate-benchmarks) (updated October 11, 2026) says shorter Shorts must hold a higher share of their runtime to stay competitive, citing retention targets above 60% for under 15 seconds, above 50% for 15 to 30, and above 40% for 30 to 60. It says those tiers are one research firm's conventions, not YouTube thresholds. - [Toptal](https://www.toptal.com/creator/post/youtube-shorts-length) (no visible date) suggests about 25 to 35 seconds and says a 45-second Short with 90% watch-through can beat a 15-second Short with 50%. - [Eklipse](https://blog.eklipse.gg/beginner-guide-2/youtube/optimal-youtube-shorts-length-to-boost-views-and-engagement.html) (November 2024) says 15 to 35 seconds for retention, without naming data behind it. Almost nobody says "always under 15 seconds". The belief we are poking at is the softer one that sits underneath: when in doubt, cut it shorter, because a short clip is easier to finish. That instinct is what makes people trim the setup or the turn out of an idea that needs 30 seconds. ## What we pulled and how We queried ClipNovia Discover for YouTube Shorts on 2026-10-29. The feed returned 20 videos. View counts, lengths and post dates below come straight from the feed. We did not filter by length. We did not analyze these frame by frame for this post. | Short (channel) | Views | Length | Posted | |---|---|---|---| | [Krishna Entered the Waters of Kaliya](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/Q1YJ-kUJ4BE) (MAHIANX) | 7.7M | 51s | 2026-09-23 | | [Brainrot ahh textbook](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/yEVCm6ibRYI) (Cyall) | 5.3M | 12s | 2026-10-08 | | [The Evolution of the Verity Song Is INSANE](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/9yVyRJt5C8A) (NO FACE) | 4.3M | 32s | 2026-08-19 | | [Bathroom Mein Insaan Aa Gaya](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/ezwA9onZ574) (Mr Ai) | 4.0M | 31s | 2026-08-16 | | [RUN for 67 Meme Story](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/kJ-bvpXFTaA) (Sosonya) | 3.8M | 36s | 2026-08-23 | | [Steal an Egg Made a BIG MISTAKE](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/1KR8zLgkqUg) (Louquit) | 2.9M | 55s | 2026-10-03 | | [Hamza nay 100 chicks ko bachaya](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/lYCrJ4ihyao) (toonyTa) | 2.9M | 30s | 2026-10-02 | | [Animation AI cartoon video of rabbit eating carrot](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/aw9NmogExVc) (AshokWM) | 2.5M | 9s | 2026-09-06 | | [Dulhan rickshaw se gir gye](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/qkab2d6t67U) (AIanimationByFarial) | 2.3M | 11s | 2026-09-22 | | [bacho ki hui adla badli, Part 1](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/ObdKC3AGgR4) (AI_DUDE_2.O) | 2.1M | 88s | 2026-08-11 | | [Jab Saanp Insaan Ban Gaye](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/4Xigtdcx0wU) (sasta universe) | 699K | 13s | 2026-08-23 | | [Billu's Funny Adventure](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/b6sAYEkGRAE) (BilluToons) | 563K | 10s | 2026-08-17 | | [The story of a girl who became a slave](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/O-krhMUgNgY) (Zenvilo) | 512K | 56s | 2026-09-19 | | [She is Quiet, Her Sister Is Fearless](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/_KEPIIKAmI4) (Chikiclicks) | 400K | 42s | 2026-10-24 | | [Village life AI story](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/aBBZW5PDHFY) (Ai Stories) | 328K | 61s | 2026-09-05 | | [Cute Pineapple Baby Takes a Sweet Bite](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/yDTHBWNH5jQ) (AI CARTOON VIDEO) | 258K | 11s | 2026-08-12 | | [Aate ko gym Jana hai kya](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/VX8pkHfbQ40) (AS_GRAPHICS) | 205K | 11s | 2026-09-08 | | [What if Thanos ordered the Infinity Stones](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/mZvQizK47BU) (Kcraft3D) | 154K | 15s | 2026-10-26 | | [Don't Look Back, Part 1](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/z3L1gkwEDvM) (Ballistic Coco) | 133K | 31s | 2026-08-18 | | [AI Fruit Drama Story](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/S0sHVYw7Cds) (Brokenvowsai0) | 106K | 82s | 2026-10-02 | Several of these also appeared in our two earlier teardowns, [seven AI animation Shorts](/blog/ai-animation-shorts-teardown-flipped-perspective-skit) and [six Shorts and the Cold Open Sheet](/blog/short-form-cold-open-sheet-six-viral-shorts). This post asks a different question of the feed: not what happens inside the clips, but how long they run. ## The numbers by length band | Length band | Shorts | Median views | Above 1M views | Range | Combined views | |---|---|---|---|---|---| | 15 seconds or less (9s to 15s) | 8 | 631K | 3 of 8 | 154K to 5.3M | 12.0M | | 30 to 61 seconds | 10 | 2.9M | 6 of 10 | 133K to 7.7M | 27.0M | | 82 to 88 seconds | 2 | 1.1M | 1 of 2 | 106K to 2.1M | 2.2M | ![Flat illustration of three timeline strips of short, medium and long lengths, the medium one highlighted with a bright marker](https://bgxgaweqenuervlutsyo.supabase.co/storage/v1/object/public/generated-images/905bc7ba615b6bbe49a92ed58572ac00.png) Four things stand out. 1. The median of the 30-to-61-second group (2.9M) is 4.6x the median of the 15-second-or-less group (631K). 2. Age does not explain it away. The median age of the short group was 52 days and of the longer group 47 days. Dividing views by days since posting (a crude measure, since views are not spread evenly over time) gives a median of about 28.8K views per day for the short group and about 58.6K for the longer one, roughly 2x instead of 4.6x. 3. Short did not mean small. The 12-second textbook clip has 5.3M views and the 9-second rabbit clip 2.5M. Length alone does not decide anything in this feed. 4. What did not show up: there was no Short between 16 and 29 seconds in this pull at all. The feed jumps from 15 to 30. We cannot say why, and with 20 videos we would not read much into it. The longer group is also not a safe bet. Four of its ten sit under 520K views, and its lowest is 133K. The short group has the same spread: its bottom five are all between 154K and 699K. What differs is where the middle sits and how many cross 1M. ## What this does and does not say It does say that a Short in the 30-to-61-second range is nothing unusual among feed winners. Half of the 20 videos sit there, and that half holds 27.0M of the 41.2M combined views. If you were about to cut a 35-second idea down to 14 seconds just to look safer, this feed gives you no evidence the cut helps. It does not say that longer is better. [Bytecap's own caveat](https://www.bytecap.io/research/best-youtube-shorts-length) applies to us too: bucket popularity is not bucket performance. We are looking at survivors. Videos that ran 35 seconds and got 800 views never made it into a feed of top performers, and neither did the 14-second ones. If long videos are made more often and fail more often, they would still show up here whenever they win. We cannot see the denominator. ## The length picker (copy and use) The point is to pick the length from the idea, not from a target. This is a planning heuristic built from this feed and from the earlier teardowns. We have not tested it against performance. ``` LENGTH PICKER Idea in one line: ______________________ 1. List the beats the idea needs. A beat is one thing the viewer must see or understand for the payoff to land. Setup ___ Step 1 ___ Step 2 ___ Turn ___ Payoff ___ Beat count: ___ 2. Single gag, one escalation, one punchline (2 to 3 beats)? Plan 9 to 15 seconds. Do not pad it. 3. Setup plus 2 or more escalation steps, or a turn (4 or more beats)? Plan 30 to 60 seconds. Do not squeeze it. 4. Check the cut budget. In the six Shorts from our Cold Open Sheet teardown, the average shot ran 2.2s to 7.3s. Beats x shots per beat x shot length = runtime. If that number is far from your plan, change the plan, not the beats. 5. If you are still unsure, make the long cut first and then remove only the beats that do no work. If removing a beat breaks the payoff, put it back. ``` Worked example (ours, not from the feed): a bathtub race where three paper boats race to a rubber duck. Beats: setup (the boats and the duck), step 1 (boat one tips), step 2 (boat two stalls on a soap wave), turn (boat three pulls the plug), payoff (the duck at the drain). That is five beats. At two shots per beat and 3 seconds per shot, it runs about 30 seconds. Cutting it to 12 seconds would remove the escalation steps and leave only a plug being pulled, which is a different, weaker joke. ## The cost angle for AI video If you generate the Short, length is also a budget decision, but not the one people expect. On per-second models, a 30-second single clip costs the same as six 5-second clips, and only the six let you redo one bad shot. We walk through that in [the 30-second clip cost trap](/blog/ai-video-30-second-clip-cost-trap). So a 30-to-60-second Short built from short clips is not automatically more expensive or riskier than a 12-second one. The price is in how many takes you need, not the final runtime. ## Where this sample is weak - 20 videos from one feed on one day. This is not a random sample of Shorts, and the feed holds videos that already succeeded. - Correlation only. We do not know why any of these has its views, and two of the longer ones (7.7M and 4.3M) and two short ones (5.3M and 2.5M) pull the medians. - Views are a snapshot. Posts range from 3 days to 11 weeks old, and views per day is a rough adjustment, not a model. - Most of the feed is AI animation, plus a few story and meme clips. The picture could look different in tutorials, podcasts, sports or product niches. - Bands are small (8, 10 and 2). The 82-to-88-second band has only two videos and says nothing. - We did not analyze these 20 for this post, so we make no claims about what is inside any single clip beyond its title, channel, length and date. - We did not make a video from the picker, so we cannot say it improves performance. ## How to check your own niche with ClipNovia The 20 rows above are what ClipNovia Discover returned, with real view counts and durations. Pull the feed for your niche, sort by length, and look at the median by band before you decide how long your next Short should be. Then run video analysis on two or three of the winners to see their beat structure. For what to put in the first seconds once the length is set, see [viral hook formulas for short-form video](/blog/viral-hook-formulas-for-short-form-video). ![Flat illustration of an index card with a ruler laid across it and a stopwatch beside it](https://bgxgaweqenuervlutsyo.supabase.co/storage/v1/object/public/generated-images/12f32deafa900d7b9976e47e1476444b.png) ## Questions we can answer from this sample **What length were the biggest Shorts in this feed?** The top five by views ran 51, 12, 32, 31 and 36 seconds. Three of them were 31 to 36 seconds. **Are under-15-second Shorts a bad idea?** No. Three of the eight in this pull passed 1M views, and the second-biggest Short in the whole set ran 12 seconds. **Is there a length with no results in this feed?** Yes: nothing between 16 and 29 seconds appeared in this pull. **Should I make my Shorts longer?** Not because of this post. Use the picker: the idea's beats set the length, and the feed only shows that 30 to 61 seconds is a normal place for winners to land. _Data pulled 2026-10-29 from ClipNovia Discover.
